UNDERSTANDING ADHD

Neuro-Affirming Approach

01

What is ADHD?

Supporting Uniqueness

Understanding the ADHD brain:

  • ADHD traits, once classified separately as ADD and ADHD, are now recognized as variations of the same neurological condition. Individuals with ADHD may exhibit primarily inattentive traits, hyperactivity and impulsivity, or a combination of both.

  • The ADHD brain often shows underdeveloped executive functioning (or self-regulation abilities), which are essential for cognitive functions like focus, emotional control, flexibility, and future planning. Think of executive functions as a control center or air traffic control system for the brain.

  • While ADHD was once viewed as a deficit in executive functions, recent research highlights that ADHD involves a mix of strengths and vulnerabilities.

The term “deficit disorder” places ADHD in the realm of pathology, or disease. Individuals with ADHD do not have a disease, nor do they have a deficit of attention; in fact, what they have is an abundance of attention. The challenge is controlling it.
